The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night begins with the Lucernarium (the solemn blessing of the Easter fire, preparation of the Paschal candle, and the illumination of the Cathedral). Following an extended proclamation of the Word, the Gloria and Alleluia are sung for the first time since Lent began. 

The Elect and Candidates receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, and then receive Holy Communion for the first time.
